HOW MUCH DOES A KITCHEN REMODEL COST IN HOUSTON IN 2026?

Straight numbers from a guy who's been building kitchens for over 20 years.

If you're thinking about redoing your kitchen here in Houston, the first thing you want to know is what it's going to run you. Fair enough. I've been remodeling kitchens across the Greater Houston area for over 20 years, so let me give you numbers we actually see on real projects, not some national average pulled off a random website.

Costs in Katy are different from costs in River Oaks. The Heights is different from Sugar Land. Houston has its own material prices, its own labor rates, its own permitting rules, and its own style preferences. So here's a local breakdown that actually means something.

THE BUDGET REFRESH: $15,000 - $30,000

This is for folks who want their kitchen to look and feel newer without ripping everything down to the studs. You keep the existing layout, which saves a ton on plumbing, electrical, and structural work.

For this price range, you're usually looking at:

  • Cabinet refacing or repainting: new doors and drawer fronts on your existing boxes, or a solid professional paint job with new hardware
  • New countertops: entry-level quartz or granite, or some of the newer laminates that honestly look great
  • Updated hardware: fresh handles, pulls, and knobs throughout
  • Fresh paint: walls, ceiling, and trim
  • New backsplash: subway tile or a simple mosaic pattern
  • Light fixture updates: swapping out dated fixtures for something more current

You're not changing the bones of the kitchen here, but honestly, a good refresh can make the room feel totally new. We see a lot of Houston homeowners go this route when they're prepping a home for sale, and the ROI is hard to beat.

THE MID-RANGE REMODEL: $30,000 - $75,000

This is where most of our Houston projects land. You're going past cosmetic updates and actually changing the guts of the kitchen. New everything, basically, but you're still working within the existing footprint.

  • New cabinets: semi-custom or quality stock cabinetry with soft-close hardware and organized interiors
  • Stone countertops: mid-grade quartz or granite with eased or beveled edges
  • Tile backsplash: designer patterns, natural stone, or handmade tiles
  • New flooring: luxury vinyl plank, engineered hardwood, or porcelain tile
  • Updated appliances: a solid stainless steel package from a name brand (fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave)
  • New sink and faucet: undermount stainless or composite sink with a pull-down faucet
  • Better lighting: recessed cans, under-cabinet LEDs, and a nice pendant or two over the island

On the higher end of this range, we can sometimes squeeze in minor layout tweaks. Moving an island, adding a pantry wall, or going from an L-shape to a U-shape. Those kinds of changes can make a huge difference in how the kitchen actually works day to day.

THE HIGH-END REMODEL: $75,000 - $150,000+

This is the full deal. We're talking structural changes, top-shelf materials, and custom everything. In neighborhoods like River Oaks, Memorial, West U, and Tanglewood, this level of remodel is pretty standard.

  • Custom cabinetry: built from scratch with specialty finishes, inset doors, furniture-style details, and built-in storage
  • Premium stone: exotic granites, quartzites, marble, or book-matched slabs that become the focal point of the whole room
  • Structural changes: taking out walls, opening the kitchen to the living areas, adding or relocating windows
  • Professional-grade appliances: Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Miele. The stuff serious home cooks want
  • Custom lighting design: a layered lighting plan with dimmers, accent lights, and statement fixtures
  • Premium flooring: wide-plank hardwood, large-format porcelain, or natural stone
  • Butler's pantry or beverage station: dedicated prep zones that add function and a serious "wow" when people walk in

WHAT DRIVES COSTS UP IN HOUSTON

Every kitchen is different, but here are the things that consistently push budgets higher around here:

  • Permits and inspections: Any structural, electrical, or plumbing work in Houston needs a permit from the City. It adds to the cost, but it also protects you when it comes time to sell.
  • Structural work: Taking out a load-bearing wall can run $3,000 to $15,000+ depending on the span and what's sitting above it. You'll need an engineer's stamp.
  • Moving plumbing or gas lines: Relocating a sink, dishwasher, or gas range adds $2,000 to $8,000. Houston's slab foundations make this trickier than it would be in a city with basements.
  • Going custom on everything: Custom cabinetry runs 2-3x what semi-custom costs. Custom stone work, specialty tile, and high-end fixtures all add up fast.
  • The labor market: Houston's construction scene is busy. Good tradespeople are in demand, and quality work costs more than it did five years ago. That's just the reality.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BUDGET

I've been doing this for over 20 years. Here's what I tell every homeowner who sits down at our table:

  • Get a detailed proposal: not a ballpark number on a napkin. You want a line-item estimate covering every material, every trade, and every phase of the project.
  • Go with a Design/Build firm: when the same company designs and builds your kitchen, the designer already knows what things cost. Fewer surprises that way.
  • Lock in your decisions early: the most expensive thing in a remodel is changing your mind after demo is done. Pick your materials and finishes before we start swinging hammers.
  • Build in a cushion: set aside 10-15% above your budget for the unexpected. Older Houston homes like to hide surprises behind walls and under floors.
  • Minimize change orders: every mid-project change costs more than if you'd planned it from the start. The design phase doesn't cost extra. Changes during construction do.
"The most expensive kitchen remodel is the one you have to redo. Get the plan right, pick good materials, hire a good contractor, and you only do it once."
